Plant safety and explosion protection

Various processes are used to finish surfaces, such as painting with wet paint, coating with powder or flock. Electrostatic spraying systems and devices are used for all of these processes today.

Both manufacturers and operators are required by the ATEX Directive 2014/34/EU and Directive 1999/92/EC to identify possible risks when handling these systems and to minimize possible negative consequences for people and the environment.

Due to my active participation in the standardization committee K239-Electrostatic spraying equipment and continuous further training, I have the necessary background knowledge for the evaluation and prevention of hazards on this equipment.

With the qualification as a ‘qualified person for testing’ according to BetrSichV, appendix 2 – Section 3, I support you as an expert with the corresponding expertise and suitable concepts for the following topics.

Risk assessments

Every workplace must be safe.

I create the necessary risk assessments and develop concepts to avoid the identified hazards.

The requirements for the operator result from Directive 1999/92/EC,

implemented by the Industrial Safety Ordinance (BetrSichV §3), the Hazardous Substances Ordinance (GefStoffV §6) and the Occupational Health and Safety Act (ArbSchG §5), as well as the Technical Rules for Hazardous Substances (TRGS) and the Technical Rules for Industrial Safety (TRBS).

Explosion protection concepts

When processing flammable substances or liquids, a potential explosion hazard must be evaluated and limited.

My scope of services includes the preparation of an explosion protection concept tailored to the local circumstances according to GefStoffV § 6 Section 9, with

Preparation of a risk assessment according to BetrSichV §3 and GefStoffV §6,

Zoneing and zone evaluation in the area of dust or solvent load as well as

evaluation of the plant environment according to the applicable regulations

TRGS 720, TRGS 721, TRGS 722, TRGS 723, TRGS 724, TRGS 725, TRGS 726, TRGS 727, TRGS 800

Testing of systems in potentially explosive atmospheres

Electrostatic spraying systems for flammable coating materials are considered systems requiring monitoring according to BetrSichV – Annex 2

Required tests are specified in the BetrSichV

§14 – Inspection of equipment before first use,

§15 – Installations requiring monitoring, inspection before commissioning and

§16 – Periodic annual inspections

With the qualification as a ”qualified person for testing” according to accordance with BetrSichV, Annex 2, Section 3, I carry out the prescribed inspections according to TRBS 1201 Part 1.

Conformity assessments

Every product must be safe.

I accompany the development process from risk analysis according to EN ISO 12100 through to CE marking. The documentation is done via the Savexpert 8.6 software tool.

All equipment that is intended for processing (flammable) materials and has its own potential ignition source is listed under Directive 2014/34/EU (ATEX Directive).

Requirements for the manufacturer of electrostatic spraying systems and equipment result from the Product Safety Act (ProdSG), the Product Safety Ordinance (11.ProdSV) and the corresponding EN standards

DIN EN 50050-1, DIN EN 50050-2, DIN EN 50050-3, DIN EN 50176, DIN EN 50177, DIN EN 50223, DIN EN 50059, DIN EN 50348, DIN EN 16985

Training and instruction of employees

According to GefStoffV §14 and BetrSichV §12, the operator is obliged to prepare operating instructions for the work areas and to instruct the employees accordingly at least once a year.

I prepare the necessary operating instructions and instruct employees in areas with explosion hazards, including imparting the necessary background knowledge about the interactions in explosion protection.

Inventory protection or obligation to retrofit

Legally marketed devices and products correspond to the “state of the art” at the time they were placed on the market and are considered safe.

These products are protected as long as there is no new evidence of a hazard.

If hazards are identified, the operator is obliged to retrofit them.

I support you in the assessment according to EmpfBS 1114 (adaptation to the state of the art in the use of work equipment) and develop solutions for implementation.

We look forward to your inquiry
