Process technology flocking

Flocking is an electrostatic process in which fibers of equal length are applied vertically to a surface. The result is a velvety surface with very different properties, which contribute to improving the products. The aim of flocking is always to create added value for the product. In addition to a visually valuable impression and enjoyable haptics, technically useful properties such as insulation against heat or cold, sound insulation, storage capacity or filter effects can be generated simultaneously. Flocked surfaces can be found in almost all areas of everyday life – for example, in automobiles, on textiles, carpets, furniture, cosmetics, or on packaging.
I have refined my expert knowledge on electrostatic flocking through more than 20 years of practice in this industry and have built up an extensive partner network in this field.

Process estimation

Various process steps are necessary to create a high-quality and durable flock surface, which must be adapted to the object to be flocked.
Depending on the desired property of the surface, different flock materials and flock types can be used. Further finishing of the finished flock surface is achieved by embossing, printing, or lasering.
I will provide you with a well-founded study on the feasibility of your product idea, the necessary process steps and parameters, as well as the suitable materials.

Optimization of flock production

A reliable and efficient flocking process is subject to many influencing variables. Material properties, machine parameters, and environmental influences must be checked regularly to avoid qualitative deviations in the product. I measure the relevant process data of the flocking plant and provide you with a plant status with suggestions for optimizing the process parameters.

Make-or-Buy

Flocking can be carried out either as an external service or with an in-house flocking facility. The decision on make-or-buy depends not only on the number of parts and part size but also on individual factors. I calculate the process steps and possible parts costs for you. I am happy to advise you on potential service providers and suppliers for flocking

Retrofits of existing plants

Flocking plants are considered to be plants requiring monitoring. Existing plants are not subject to grandfathering. The owner is always responsible for safe operation. Older flocking plants can usually be retrofitted up at a reasonable cost with the necessary expertise. Appropriate concepts for a possible retrofit and operation according to the valid regulations can be worked out.

Evaluation of flocking plants

Flocking plants are usually custom-designed and set up for specific products. In the case of a purchase or sale, an assessment of the condition or market value is difficult to determine. The same applies to questions about expansion or conversion to other products. Due to my many years of experience in selling these plants, I can support you with appropriate expertise and suitable concepts.

Industrial engineering flocking plants

Various devices, machines, and equipment can be used for flocking and upstream and downstream processes. Therefore, a corresponding production concept with proposals for the procurement of this equipment includes the following aspects:

Equipment for any necessary pre-treatment (plasma, fluorination, primer). This optimizes the adhesion of the flock surface to the product surface and achieves the best possible abrasion resistance.

Application equipment for adhesives. The spectrum of possibilities ranges from manual application to the use of application robots, including the required booth technology.

Machines and equipment for electrostatic flocking. In addition to standard machines, flocking equipment is often adapted and optimized to the component geometries to be flocked. Suitable booth technology with suction and filter equipment ensures a closed process sequence and a clean plant environment.

Drying equipment. Cabinet or continuous dryers are frequently used to cure the flock adhesive. An adapted conveyor system ensures an optimum flow of parts.

Machines for component cleaning. The final cleaning step, i.e., the removal of loose flock fibers, is achieved by a combination of blowing, suction, and ionization.

Devices for quality assurance. Various testing devices are available for evaluating the materials used and the finished flock surface.

Systems for room air-conditioning. From a process engineering point of view, flocking in an air-conditioned environment is required. The necessary booth and air-conditioning technology is adapted to the customer’s conditions.
